BLAKEHAUS MALIBU 2024 CRAIG ELLWOOD'S HUNT HOUSE
This iteration of BLAKEHAUS mines the aesthetics of modern architecture, West Coast minimalism, and historical modern design in a site-specific installation at The Hunt House in Malibu, CA. Designed and built by Craig Ellwood in 1957 for Victor and Elizabeth Hunt, this architecturally significant design traverses Bauhaus and the International Style doctrine with California informality. Honored as an Architectural Record House of the Year in 1959, it is a quintessential example of California Modernism.
The award-winning restoration was led by architect Diane Bald, who along with her husband Michael Budman are the present owners of the house. With a team led by Blair Jenhke, Jim Tyler, Jim Budman and many craftsman, the Hunt house was restored to its original design.
Featured artists include Peter Alexander, Lita Albuquerque, Stephanie Bachiero, Larry Bell, Tony Delap, Joe Goode, Eric Orr, Phillip K. Smith III, and De Wain Valentine.
Design includes important works by Mario Bellini, Sia Bologna, Joe Colombo, Pierre Guariche, Willy Guhl, Paul Frankl, Max Ingrand, Pierre Jeanneret, Angelo Lelii, Angelo Mangiarotti, Enzo Mari, Mathieu Matégot, Axel Salto, Charles Siclis, Andre Sornay, and Marco Zanuso.
